When You Hit the Window, God Will Pick You Up

IMG_1727A few weeks ago on one particular morning, a small Goldfinch flew into the window of our sun room and was knocked unconscious.  I (Jerry) went out and picked up the bird and held it loosely in my hand and began to gently stroke it and pray for its recovery. Although she had a pretty nasty bruise on her head, she eventually came around and finally was able to fly out of my hand and onward.  It was only a little while later that another bird–this time a Downy Woodpecker–also flew into the window and was knocked out.  Again, I went out and picked it up, holding it loosely while stroking it and praying for its revival.  It took quite a while but this one also IMG_1741recovered and was able to leave my hand and fly.

As we reflected on this unusual and rather traumatic morning, it was not difficult to see the parallel between what occurred and how God responds when we “hit the window.”  Whatever the circumstance you may find yourself experiencing–maybe you’ve “hit the window” with a very difficult relationship; maybe you’re in the midst of great pain as you work through the healing of past hurts; maybe you’re struggling to break free from an addiction; or maybe you’re processing grief from a very painful loss–whatever has caused you to “hit the window” and become disoriented or “knocked out,” you are not alone.  It is the heart of God to pick you up, gently hold you, stroke your hair and give you the time you need to recover.  He will NOT turn away or ignore you.  He will come and pick you up, hold you, and help restore you so you can “fly” again.

Remember what Jesus said that is recorded in Luke 12:6-7,  “Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies?  Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.” (NIV)
